Emergency Lighting Testing and Emergency Lighting Commissioning

Having Emergency Lighting Systems in place is the first step to ensuring a safe evacuation in the event of an emergency but emergency lighting testing and commissioning must be carried out to ensure that the systems are in full working order.

Occupiers of building requiring emergency lighting are obligated by law to test their emergency lighting regularly and record the results.

The BS5266 requires the following regarding emergency lighting testing and commissioning:

  • Daily: Visual check operation of lamps in maintained luminaries
  • Monthly: A functional test not exceeding 25% of the rated duration
  • Six Monthly: Test of at least 1 hour (for 3 hours systems)
  • Three Yearly: A full discharge test
  • Subsequently: After year 3, the annual test must be for the full duration
